Black SnowGames

Quiet things, made in Oslo.

A small Norwegian studio. We build calm, unhurried software — the sort you open to settle rather than to be entertained at. This page says who we are and where to find us.

Contact What we have out

A studio, not a factory.

Black Snow Games works from Tidemandsgate in Oslo. The work is small and deliberate: one thing at a time, finished properly, and released when it is actually done rather than when a calendar says so. Nothing we publish asks for an account, carries advertising, or wants a connection to anything.

There is not much more to say on a web page. If you want to talk about a project, the address at the bottom reaches a person rather than a form.

Why the name Snow in a city is white for about an hour. Everything we make is meant to hold up rather better than that.

Work twenty-five and rest five and your sessions begin at two minutes past the hour forever. Rest seven instead and they begin at fifteen different minutes before the pattern comes back.

Any work-and-rest rhythm has a cycle: the two lengths added together. The clock has a cycle of sixty. How long before the two agree again depends on nothing but the greatest common divisor of those numbers — and most pleasant-sounding rhythms share almost nothing with sixty, so they wander across the clock face for hours before repeating. Set the two lengths and watch the start times land.

A 25-and-5 rhythm comes to 30 minutes, which divides the hour exactly. Starting at noon, every session afterwards begins on the hour or the half hour — 2 positions on the clock face, forever. Nothing drifts, and nothing surprises you.

Each mark is a minute of the hour on which some session begins, starting from the top. The count is 60 divided by the greatest common divisor of the cycle and 60 — it was checked against a direct simulation for every cycle length from 1 to 180 minutes.

This is arithmetic about clocks, not about any particular piece of software: two whole numbers and their common divisor. It is on this page because it is the sort of small, quiet fact we like, and it tells you nothing about how anything we make behaves.

Out now: Hearth

One title, on Google Play. Hearth is a warm corner you build for yourself — a fireplace or rain on a window, a blanket, a mug, a sleeping cat — with a plain focus timer resting over the scene when you need one. It runs offline, holds no account and shows no advertising.
